Out of Africa

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a leader in ending apartheid and promoting equality in South Africa, became a leader again by allowing his personal genome to be sequenced. Along with a Khoisan man from the Kalahari Desert, he became one of the first residents of subSaharan Africa to take part in the genomic revolution, in part, he said, because he hoped the medical benefits of the new technology would extend to southern Africa.

"The Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center's role was to generate the actual sequence of Dr. Tutu, using recently developed whole genome approaches," said Dr. Richard A. Gibbs director of the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center and a senior author of the report.

The findings, which appeared in the journal Nature, give new clues about how the genetic sequences differ among populations.

For example, the gene differences seen in the African genomes from different geographic and ethnic populations are greater than those seen between a European and an Asian.
