New Board Chair has High Hopes for BCMby Sara M. Escamilla-Tristan ![]() Marc Shapiro After a 31-year career with financial giant JP Morgan Chase & Co. and its predecessor banks, Marc Shapiro is no stranger to success. In business and in the community, he is proudest of his role in contributing to organizations that—even in the most stressful times—are able to maintain their stability, integrity and service to customers. "Baylor College of Medicine's reputation derives from its people—starting with Dr. Michael DeBakey and his protégées and extending now to so many new talented researchers and scholars," said Shapiro, who assumed the post of chair of the board of trustees mid-year. He is currently non-executive chairman of the Chase Bank of Texas. My view would be that difficult times create unusual opportunities," Shapiro adds. Having served on the BCM board since 1990, he has witnessed many changes. The most significant to him is BCM's emergence as a leading research institution. He recalls that in 1990, BCM did not have the preeminence that it now holds among the top tier of medical schools across the nation. "Credit goes to Dr. William Butler and Dr. Ralph Feigin for understanding the importance of genetics and biomedical research," Shapiro said. Their roles in recruiting gifted scientists like Drs. Bert O'Malley, Richard Gibbs, Huda Zoghbi and many others gave the College its national standing. He said that preserving and enhancing this reputation is a paramount goal. "I am optimistic that we will find solutions and strategies that will enable BCM to translate its understanding of genetics and the human genome into the personalized medicine and patient care of the 21st century," he said. "I have found that self-satisfaction is much more a motivator than money or recognition." Born in 1947 to Ruth and Samuel Shapiro, Shapiro was one of four children. A native Houstonian, he acquired a special regard for the city's development and growth. "I am a great admirer of Houston and its can-do spirit," he says. "When Americans went to the moon, we were proud that the effort was based in our city."
Marc Shapiro, BCM's board chair, addressed a recent Town Hall meeting of faculty and staff. Shapiro was valedictorian of his class at Kinkaid High School and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where he completed his undergraduate education. He was tops in his M.B.A. class at Stanford University. When asked about his exceptional academic accomplishments, Shapiro said, "Over the course of my career, I have found that self-satisfaction is much more a motivator than money or recognition. I have also discovered that the real world is a lot more complicated than academic studies—you often have to make decisions with less information and time than you would like to. No group appreciates this fact more than medical professionals." Dr. William T. Butler, BCM interim president, said that Shapiro brings a special kind of strength to the leadership. "At a time when the College feels significant operating challenges, it is comforting to have someone with Marc's breadth of experience at the helm." For Shapiro, accepting his new role as chairman means taking on new challenges and opportunities. |
