'Pioneer' Studies Bacteria to Understand Cancer
Dr. Susan Rosenberg, professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, was one of 18 scientists to receive the National Institutes of Health Director's Pioneer Award, which honors exceptionally creative scientists whose work seeks new answers to often age-old problems.
At first, Rosenberg's results showing that the bacteria—plain old E. coli—mutate at a faster rate when they are under stress were controversial, but now are accepted. Mutations can lead to positive and negative effects. Her work could lead to better understanding of the way in which DNA or genetic material gets repaired and the ways in which those repairs fail, resulting in cancer or resistance to disease-fighting drugs.
"We hope to find the genes, proteins, pathways and networks that control this DNA damage in E. coli and extrapolate it to humans," said Rosenberg. "We think many of these will be important cancer genes not previously recognized."
