Baylor Alumni Help Ease the Financial Burdens of Current Studentsby Dipali Pathak
The generosity of alumni such as Drs. Shirley Kindberg-Coln and Dale Coln make it easier for students to pursue medical education. Growing up in a family of musicians helped Jonathan Hager excel as a violinist, a career he planned to pursue even after college. However, a chance meeting with Dr. David Pennington, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry and former head of the pre-health program at Baylor University, sparked his interest in the field of medicine. Pennington told Hager of the opportunity to attend Baylor University and then Baylor College of Medicine through the Baylor2 Medical Track. Four students each year enter the combined eight-year baccalaureate/M.D. program. One of the four students receives a scholarship of $80,000 to cover the costs of four years at Baylor University and then four additional years at Baylor College of Medicine. This scholarship for students interested in pursuing medicine is made possible by people such as Dr. Shirley Kindberg-Coln and her husband, Dr. Dale Coln. The Colns graduated from BCM in 1961, and have fond memories of their experiences at BCM, where they met. Five children and 21 grandchildren later, the Colns still recall the well-rounded education they received at BCM. "We benefited so much from the schooling we received at BCM, and we realize it's tough for kids who are on a tight budget to pay for medical school," said Kindberg-Coln, who worked her way through her undergraduate and medical school education. She went on to a residency in pediatrics, and her husband went into surgery and then pediatric surgery. Kindberg-Coln attended Wheaton College for her undergraduate studies, and she and her husband initially created a scholarship program with Wheaton for students interested in pursuing the field of medicine. Coln graduated from Baylor University, and the couple established a similar scholarship with Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine. In 2005, the Shirley Kindberg-Coln, M.D., and Dale Coln, M.D., BU/BCM Scholar at Baylor College of Medicine was established. This scholarship made it possible for Hager to attend the two schools. "I could not have gone to Baylor University without this scholarship, and would never have considered studying the field of medicine and attending Baylor College of Medicine without this opportunity," said Hager. Hager is grateful for the chance the Colns' gave him to fulfill his dream and plans to do the same himself someday. "It's a blessing that they used their experiences to give back to current students," said Hager.
Medical student Jonathan Hager appreciates the generosity of alumni such as Kindberg-Coln and Coln and plans to follow in their footsteps. Hager has been able to nurture his love for music by serving as the concert master of the orchestra at Baylor University and is now a member of the Texas Medical Center Orchestra. He hopes to one day open a ranch for inner-city youth, where they would have the opportunity to explore activities that they may not get to in the city, including horse riding, fishing and nature hikes, all while building their self-esteem. "I think studying the field of medicine is compatible with this dream," said Hager. Hager has enjoyed understanding the full complexity of the human body and appreciates that his professors at BCM emphasize the role that a doctor can play in someone's life. "They emphasize how it's more than just taking care of the body," said Hager. "It has really strengthened my faith." |
