Robert Todd Named to Lead BCM's Department of Medicineby Lori Williams
Robert F. Todd, M.D., Ph.D. Robert F. Todd, M.D., Ph.D., has been named Chair of the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Todd, an internationally recognized expert in cancer research, education and clinical care, held the Frances and Victor Ginsberg Professorship of Hematology/Oncology and served as the Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Health System prior to joining BCM on December 1. "Dr. Todd is an outstanding choice to direct the talented group of physicians who comprise the BCM Department of Medicine," said William T. Butler, M.D., BCM Interim President. "His expertise in research, education and patient care, along with his demonstrated leadership abilities, will be of tremendous benefit to Baylor College of Medicine as we expand our efforts in all these areas in the years ahead." Todd received his undergraduate, medical and scientific doctorate degrees from Duke University. He completed residency training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School, a clinical fellowship in oncology at the Sidney Farber Cancer Institute (SFCI), and a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Tumor Immunology of the SFCIs before joining the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In 1984, he moved to the University of Michigan where he has served as Associate Vice President for Research and the Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Internal Medicine. Baylor College of Medicine's exceptionally rich scientific environment presents unique opportunities for further growth. An oncologist with a special interest in gastrointestinal and lung cancers, his research has centered on human immunobiology. He is the author of more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 100 articles, book chapters, abstracts and other communications. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and currently serves as Associate Editor of Translational Research. "I am thrilled and deeply honored to be named Chair of the Department of Medicine at one of the nation's premier medical schools," said Todd. "The exceptionally rich scientific environment at Baylor coupled with the upcoming opening of a new hospital and clinic present truly unique opportunities for the further growth and development of the department." The BCM Department of Medicine has 700 faculty members in 18 departmental sections and centers. |
