BCM Looks to the Future on the McNair Campus

by Toby Weber

Rendering of the future Baylor Clinic and HospitalIn May 2007, Baylor College of Medicine broke ground on its McNair Campus, the future home of the Baylor Clinic and Hospital. The College is taking full advantage of the clean slate provided by the campus, designing the Clinic and Hospital to include the most forward-thinking approaches to patient care and service, as well as structural features that will enable future growth and the use of new medical technologies as they are developed.

"The design and construction of the new Clinic and Hospital is one of the largest and most significant undertakings ever assumed by BCM. Knowing that, we're making sure to create a facility that can provide the highest level of care and service far into the future," said Donna Sollenberger, CEO of the Clinic and Hospital and BCM Executive Vice President.

In the area of patient service, BCM is seeking to provide the easiest, most comfortable and most convenient experience possible through its design of the Clinic and Hospital. On the first floor there will be a one-stop pre-admitting and testing area, allowing patients to easily begin the check-in procedure. The admission and registration process will be completed in the patient's room.

Design of the new Clinic and Hospital includes forward-looking patient services and elements that enable growth and the adoption of new technologies.

The rooms themselves are designed to provide patients with the highest levels of care, safety, privacy and comfort. Each room in the hospital is a private room. The bathroom will be situated to minimize the number of steps from the patient bed, and handrails from the bed to the restroom will help prevent patient falls. Rooms will have windows that provide natural light and a view of the outdoors. Rooms will also have amenities for visitors and family, including a computer desk, a day bed and a storage cabinet for personal belongings.

Of course, the Clinic and Hospital will have several features that enable the highest quality of care, as well. The emergency department, for instance, will include a super elevator leading directly to the catheter labs and operating rooms. This feature will speed the care of stroke and heart attack patients, whose outcomes can hinge on a matter of seconds.

In terms of future advances, the Hospital is being built to accommodate for expansion and the integration of new technologies. It includes, for example, large hybrid operating rooms with reinforced floors and ceilings. These structural features will maximize the flexibility of the rooms by allowing them to be easily reconfigured to accommodate leading-edge medical devices and technologies as they become available.

"The practice of health care is poised to change significantly in the coming years as we gain a deeper understanding of the human genome and how to apply it to provide personalized medical treatment," said Sollenberger. "With the forward-looking features designed into the Clinic and Hospital, this facility will remain on the forefront of quality service and care for decades to come."

Construction by the Numbers

Construction of the Baylor Clinic and Hospital on the McNair Campus began in February. Below are some interesting facts on what it takes to build the structure.

Excavation/Fill Work

  • 165,000 cubic yards of dirt were excavated, which filled 20,625 trucks
  • An additional 10,200 cubic yards of structural fill were installed

Concrete

  • Approximately 4,373 trucks delivered concrete to the jobsite and 650,000 square feet of concrete structural slab have been placed
  • 43,731 cubic yards of concrete for the clinic, hospital and garage have been poured

(On August 1, six simultaneous pours of concrete happened in a single day for a total of 1,700 cubic yards of concrete from 175 concrete trucks.)

Rebar/Miscellaneous Metals

  • 7,099,639 pounds of rebar have been used in the building
  • 295,200 pounds of post tension cables have been placed in the facility

Work Force at the Peak of Construction

  • At the peak of construction, there will be 700-900 workers at the site
