Campaign Reaches MilestoneWhen Baylor College of Medicine launched the Best Minds Best Medicine campaign in 2003, it set the most ambitious fundraising goal in Houston history by declaring its intention to raise $1 billion over the next 10 years. Now just past the campaign's halfway point, the generosity of BCM supporters has pushed the total past the $700 million threshold. That figure alone surpasses many of the most successful fundraising efforts in local philanthropy. An anonymous, undesignated donation to the College of $25 million put the campaign over the $700 million mark in October. The gift's unrestricted nature allows the College to apply the funds to the areas where they are most needed. BCM has already chosen to dedicate the gift toward the construction of its new clinic and hospital. When completed, it will be one of the world's largest and most sophisticated facilities for the practice of personalized medicine. The facility is set to open in 2011 on the College's McNair Campus. According to Lisa Kennedy, the College's Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Administration and Chief Development Officer, the Clinic and Hospital and the gifts that make them possible are instrumental to BCM's future. "When BCM completes construction on its new Clinic and Hospital the College will have full control over its own teaching facility for the first time in its history," she said. "By supporting that goal, this donation plays a vital role in BCM's future growth and success. I thank the donors for their outstanding example of generosity and selflessness." |
