Steps to Discovery and Innovation
Peter G. Traber, M.D. Baylor College of Medicine is built on a foundation of discovery and innovation through the creativity of our faculty and staff. The path to discovery is often a long and winding road that takes many years to travel. Along the way there are detours and hurdles that must be overcome but with a focus on finding answers, these journeys result in great accomplishments. The summer issue of Solutions highlights just a few of the discoveries that are taking place every day at Baylor College of Medicine in all of our mission areas. As you read about Dr. Huda Zoghbi and her quest to find answers for the neurodegenerative disease spinocerebellar ataxia type 1, you will find that this journey of discovery has been in progress for more than 20 years in the research lab and with patients afflicted with this disease. Each step of the way has given Dr. Zoghbi and her team new answers to the cause of the disease and hope for finding a cure. Discoveries also take place in the community. Years of research have shown that children thrive when both parents are actively involved in the lives of their children. In today's society we have to find ways to accomplish this in both traditional and non-traditional family settings. The Baylor Teen Health Clinic, founded in 1976, is led by Dr. Peggy Smith. Her team has worked with the Texas Attorney General to find new ways to keep teen dads involved with their children through an innovative project called "Strong Start Stable Families." In this article you will see first-hand how we are making a difference in the lives of young men and women facing parenthood. Our Chancellor Emeritus, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, has long been recognized around the world for his discoveries in the field of cardiovascular surgery and his work as a medical statesman. In April, he was honored by the United States Congress and presented with the Congressional Gold Medal for his decades of work in medicine and science. We are pleased to share in this issue some photographic moments from this historic occasion. Dr. DeBakey is the epitome of discovery and innovation and we are so proud that he has called Baylor College of Medicine his home for six decades. Dr. Vijay Krishan, an economics professor at Penn State University, tells his students, "The essence of living is discovering. Indeed, it is the joy of discovery that makes life worth the effort." I hope that you enjoy this issue of Solutions and being part of the steps to discovery and innovation at Baylor College of Medicine. Peter G. Traber, M.D. |
