BCM Campaign puts Personalized Medicine on the Fast-Track
Peter G. Traber, M.D. Baylor College of Medicine's vision is to be among the elite medical schools in the country and to be the destination of choice for health-related education, biomedical research and superior health care. This vision inspires our endeavors and drives our Best Minds Best Medicine Campaign. The articles in this issue of Solutions tell the story of how our priorities are already making a difference in the way we teach, explore and practice medicine. Five years ago the College created a strategic plan to guide us along this exciting pathway. Everything we have accomplished to date has brought our vision closer to realization. We have the people, the tools and the plan to be a leader in this history-making era of medical science. Our success has been the result of dedicated efforts by our faculty, staff and trainees united with tremendous philanthropic support from the community. As we look to the future, we see it reflected in the construction of Baylor Clinic and Hospital, being built from the ground up on a foundation of personalized medicine. This unique building on the McNair Campus will integrate outpatient and inpatient facilities, diagnostic and therapeutic services, and space for education, research and the latest technology in one location. Most importantly, Baylor Clinic and Hospital will be driven by science and gene-based medicine. Across the nation many institutions are talking about personalized medicine, but BCM has a real opportunity to deliver it faster and more effectively than anywhere else. Personalized medicine is about providing the right therapy for the right person at the right time by understanding that individual's biology. Personalized medicine is also about the highest quality care that makes patient safety, best practices and improved clinical outcomes its top priorities and unparalleled service its mandate. This integrated, patient-centric approach is the future of medicine—the best medicine—and that is what the best minds at BCM are poised to deliver. Houston has been enormously generous to Baylor College of Medicine since our move here 65 years ago. We know that with continued philanthropic support we can accelerate the benefits to the local, national and international community by increasing the speed with which we bring innovations in medicine from the lab bench to the bedside. As this issue of Solutions details, ours is an ambitious plan, but it is truly an opportunity for the College and our community partners to create something historic together. Peter G. Traber, M.D. |
