SPORE Spawns New Lymphoma Efforts

What's a SPORE?
Special Program of Research Excellence

Last fall, the National Cancer Institute once again recognized Baylor College of Medicine as one of only a few institutions worthy of one of their SPORE grants—this time in the area of lymphoma. The five-year grant for $11.5 million will allow BCM physicians and scientists to look for new ways to fight lymphoma and a form of chronic leukemia, in cooperation with The Methodist Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital and other affiliated institutions, including Ben Taub General Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

There are only three other lymphoma SPOREs in the country. The lymphoma SPORE here is led by Professors Helen Heslop, M.D., and Malcolm Brenner, M.D., both members of the BCM Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center.

This is the third SPORE awarded to the Duncan Cancer Center; others are the NCI Breast SPORE and NCI Prostate SPORE. Projects planned for the new Lymphoma SPORE include:

  • Validation of targets for treatment using special white blood cells to attack the cancer in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients.
  • Engineering special T-cells that will help the immune system to target tumor cells in some types of lymphoma.
  • Improving treatment in patients with various types of lymphoma using a special type of vaccination.
  • Finding ways to overcome the treatment-blunting effects of some types of immune system cells.
  • Looking for cancer stem cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia as possible targets for future therapies.
