Kleberg Foundation Gift Establishes RNAi Screening Core FacilityBCM will create a Ribonucleic Acid Interference (RNAi) Screening Core Facility with a recent $2.26 million gift from the Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation. The facility, to be housed in the Verna and Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, will give investigators the tools for targeting classes of genes including those involved in stem cell biology, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Genetics Thomas Westbrook, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Biochemistry Zhou Songyang, Ph.D., will set up and oversee the RNAi core, which will make available the raw materials and technological support needed to conduct systematic surveys of gene function and to carry out specific experiments on functional classes of genes. For 36 years, the innovative collaboration between BCM and the San Antonio-based foundation has helped to set the standard for genetics research. The foundation's generosity established the Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. Center for Human Genetics in 1971. Since that time, the foundation's support also has made possible many groundbreaking strides by BCM researchers in analyzing the rat, cow and human genomes. |
