Clinical trials for cancer southward boundCollaboration in clinical studies at BCM now means going global Starting this summer, the newly formed Pan American Cancer Trials (PACT) Network will link cancer research centers in the United States with study sites in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia under the coordinating leadership of the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at BCM. "The primary purpose is to be able to conduct novel clinical translational research with Baylor providing infrastructure and a certain degree of oversight," said oncologist Jenny Chang, C.N., M.B.B.Ch., Associate Professor at BCM's Breast Center and the College's PACT coordinator. "A large part of it will be collection of tissue to see whether or not we are actually hitting the target and achieving cancer cell death." In addition to establishing and expanding a research-focused tissue tumor bank, the network pro-vides an opportunity for expedient patient enrollment and inclusion of unique patient populations. The international initiative is mutually beneficial, said Chang. "We will be able to offer state-of-the-art medicines and treatment to our neighbors under the auspices of a clinical trial network that is carefully monitored and will hopefully improve access to new medicines," said Chang. |
