Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who attended medical school and worked onboard an Arctic whaler as a doctor before switching professional tracks. His entry, a thank-you note written in Dec. 1907 to the hosts of a recent dinner, states, "Many thanks for the photo slides but fear we couldn't use them as we have no lantern."
