Bliss, President James Garfield's personal physician, who wrote on Executive Mansion (pre-"White House") stationery on Sept. 14, 1881, "The President is coming along favorably" following an assassination attempt. (Bliss' prognosis proved fleeting – Garfield took a turn for the worse and died five days later.)
