Altruistic Artby Laura Madden-Fuentes
"Antelope Canyon" by Emily Murphy Its been said that life imitates art. But can art benefit art? The BCM Art Show does just that. In its fifth year of existence, the show features work from numerous artistic disciplines, including photography, acrylic and oil painting, jewelry, collages, sculpture, ink drawings and embroidery—with all proceeds going towards another art program that aids children with cancer and blood disorders. The show began in 2002 with graduate student Bonnie Nannenga, the Graduate School's council president at the time who wanted a place to display her artwork. It served as a fundraising event for the council for the first three years. Last year, a graduate student in cellular biology, Brandy Heckman, took the reins of the show and transformed it into a fundraiser benefiting an outside program. She wanted to get the students more involved in the community.
"Lounging Leopard" by Sandy Grimm The recent BCM Art Show counted 49 artists, 1,067 artworks, and raised more than $4,000. "When I was beginning to plan the show, the Houston Chronicle published an article about two brothers entering their art in "Making A Mark," an exhibit at Texas Children's Cancer Center (TCCC) at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine that displays art created by children all over the world during their treatment and recovery," said Heckman. "I was inspired by some of the statements made by the program director, Carol Herron. After a quick phone call, there was no doubt; it was the perfect cause—art for art."
"Debrecen" by Michael Mancini, Ph.D. "Making A Mark," is a part of TCCC's Arts In Medicine (AIM) program sponsored by The Periwinkle Foundation. Funds raised by the BCM Art Show help defray the cost of art supplies and ongoing artist residencies at the Cancer Center. The BCM Art Show allows for not only artistic expression by students, faculty and staff, but also compassion.
