Rx for Childhood ObesityGo with the FLOWby Ross Tomlin
Enter BCM's Family Lifestyle OverWeight prevention program, which in 2004 formed a unique partnership with Houston's YES Academy, where school officials fretted over their largely overweight middle schoolers. FLOW project directors Drs. Chermaine Tyler and Craig Johnston, both of the Children's Nutrition Research Center, assumed the tall task of developing easy, effective strategies for kids to lose weight. The CNRC is operated by Baylor College of Medicine in cooperation with Texas Children's Hospital and the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "A lot of these kids didn't know what a Frisbee was," said Johnston, whose youthful team personally led circuit-training activities and nutrition classes at the school. "We teach kids low-maintenance activities that they can also do at home." Getting kids not only to lose weight but also to keep it off presents a daunting challenge for pediatric nutrition experts. Because kids can't be supervised around the clock, they must become deputized to combat obesity on their own. The FLOW team invites students and parents alike to monthly nutrition classes. Strikingly, the extent of parents' misconception about food is often at least as high as their children's. In the end, FLOW kids dropped an astounding 2.6 percent in body mass index on average after the program's first year. And kept it off. The secret to FLOW's success? "We're role models for the kids," said Tyler, "and the kids are role models for their parents." |
