For a Long-Lost Autistic Friend

by Diane Stevens, Tufts University School of Medicine

Return to The Bards of Baylor

I still remember,
Though it’s twenty years
Since you dropped into my lap,
All knees and elbows,
Or clung to my neck in the pool,
Tossing up water, giggling with joy
At the magic beads sparkling in the chlorine air.

Your sudden headlong leap on deck,
Your bursting, plosive shout
Rebounding off the tiles,
I still remember.

And most of all, your silence.
Words eluded you, or you them.
What passed between us was the sound
Of the deep, unspeakable sea in each of us.

Where are you now?

When next I find myself
On a quiet shore, alone,
I’ll wash a bone-white shell in the surf,
Press it to my ear,
And in its darkest, inner chambers,
Listen for you.
