Solutions from Science

Peter G. Traber, M.D.Science is the foundation of innovative solutions. Scientists at Baylor College of Medicine, like their colleagues around the world, seek answers to human illness. Whether they are studying the inner workings of the brain or whether they seek to understand basic biochemical processes that determine metabolism, biomedical scientists ultimately share the same goal - to diagnose and treat, and perhaps to cure human disease.

This issue of Solutions contains several stories that examine some of the groundbreaking research that occurs on a daily basis at Baylor College of Medicine. The focus is on the science of the brain - research that unlocks the secrets of how the mind functions and how to treat debilitating disorders such as stroke. The full spectrum of research at the College is highlighted, from understanding basic biochemical mechanisms to integrated organ function to patient studies advancing therapy. Those of us who come to work each day and are privileged to witness some of the world's greatest minds at work, remain humbled by all that science has offered in the past - and all that it will afford in the future.

Perhaps a little known secret is that true science is not solely the result of brilliant concepts, well thought out hypotheses, carefully crafted studies, and meticulous evaluation.

True science comes from the heart. In order to discover, one must wish to find answers. One must want to know.

In science, we find solutions. In solutions, we attain better health for all. I hope you will discover for yourself in this issue not only some of the innovative research projects underway at Baylor, but the many other daily solutions - from physicians helping disaster survivors or the mentally ill, to new methods for treating our soldiers, the beneficence of our philanthropic community that provides support for important work, or the story of students helping students to better understand the world of science.

To know. To heal. These are solutions.
