Conga Line for Cancer Curesby Kristi Krupala Peacock feathers and Samba rhythms were the hallmarks of the It Takes Two to Tango gala, an event marking the finale of a yearlong fundraising effort for the Honor Your Father Campaign for Prostate Cancer Research. The May 7 gala was made possible when The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine and Lester and Sue Smith joined forces, culminating in the presentation of a $6.4 million check by Lester Smith to BCM President and CEO Dr. Peter G. Traber. Smith is on the BCM Board of Trustees and founded Honor Your Father, which benefits the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor. The gala began with a full-participation conga line that never really slowed down - and the excitement built from there. Two of the hotel's ballrooms were transformed into enchanting worlds of Carnaval and dance. Championship ballroom dancers, along with friends and fellow champion ballroom teammates of honorees Lester and Sue Smith, impressed and inspired the crowd of more than 1,100 guests, showing off their dance moves throughout the evening as three bands played on. The extraordinary gift represented all funds raised to date, including the generous dollar-for-dollar match provided through the Lester Smith and Sue Smith Foundation. The evening also served as a tribute to the Smiths' tireless efforts and hard work and saluted gala chairs Jan Carson and Tim Connolly, co-chairs Jan and Dan Duncan, and Partnership president Carol Sawyer. Traber had a surprise of his own for the Smiths when he announced the naming of the Lester and Sue Smith Urology Clinic at Baylor College of Medicine. Clearly, the Smiths have not "missed a step" in an energetic year of fundraising and awareness during the Honor Your Father Campaign which concluded on Father's Day, June 19. |
