Campus Information
Housing
Housing is assigned by the SMART Program. The SMART Program is a residential program, emphasizing the importance of getting to know other participants and sharing ideas and dreams for the future. All participants will be housed near the Texas Medical Center typically at near-by Rice University. Details will be provided once all arrangements are finalized. Rooms vary from a few single to triple occupancy, with appropriate increases in space for multiple residents. Accepted applicants will be sent further details about registering for housing.
Parking
Houston has extensive bus transit. A new light rail line connects the Medical Center to some areas of Houston. Some students prefer to bring their own cars, and are very popular. We are a spread out city and there are great places to take weekend road trips - the beach at Galveston (50 miles), the Hill Country, Austin, San Antonio and Padre Island. Parking near the dorm will be available for SMART participants. All details will be provided once arrangements are finalized.
Transportation
Traveling To and From Baylor College of Medicine
The SMART Program does not provide transportation for participants. There are two airports in Houston, Hobby and Intercontinental. Hobby is the closest airport to the BCM complex. Participants should arrange personal transportation to and from the airport. However, upon your arrival there are number of mechanisms you can use in order to get to Rice University. You can take a taxi to your dorm, or a more reasonably priced shuttle to a Texas Medical Center hotel and we will have someone pick you up. During your stay in Houston you can take advantage of Metro, our Houston area bus system.
Bringing your Own Car
BCM is located in the Texas Medical Center. You might want to bring your car for the summer. If you have a car, you will be quite popular. There is parking at Rice University, but it may be blocks from the dorm.
Living & Lifestyle
Exercise
During your nine-week stay at Baylor College of Medicine, you may purchase monthly access to the BCM gym. The facilities include a full-size, indoor basketball court, an aerobics and cardiovascular room, and a weight room. Access to the Rice University gym, which has a pool, costs $5/day use.
Dining
SMART participants have many dining options during their stay. The SMART program and graduate departments provide meals several times a week. There are kitchens in the dorm, with a number of small appliances furnished by the SMART Program. BCM affiliated students, faculty and SMART participants receive a discount at all Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals. The food is good at these hospitals and you can check what is being served that day by calling their dining hotline.
Houston is known for its world-renowned restaurants. You can walk to Rice Village to find some great restaurants. More restaurant options to fit every price range can be found a drive or metro ride away.
Groceries may be purchased at nearby Fiesta or Kroger or many other stores.
