Olympic Torch relay through the Texas Medical Center
December 10, 2001

  • The 162 torchbearers carried the flame through more than 31 miles of Houston streets on its way to Salt Lake City for the 2002 Olympic games. Torchbearers included local residents, local community and business leaders, as well as past Olympians, such as gold medalist Laura Wilkinson, figure skater Tara Lipinski and gymnast Mary Lou Retton. Lipinski carried the flame off the Amtrak train that brought the torch in from Beaumont, Texas, and started the race.
  • The Torch Relay began Tuesday, December 4th in Atlanta, host city of the most recent U.S. Olympic games. More than 11,500 people will carry the flame for approximately 13,500 miles. The Olympic flame will travel through 46 states, completing its trek in Salt Lake City on Feb. 8, 2002. There are four states that will not get the flame, which are Minnesota, Hawaii, South Dakota and North Dakota.
