Visiting Medical Student Elective Program

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is currently accepting elective applications from senior medical school students in good standing from U.S./Canadian LCME certified Medical Schools, and upon approval, for International Medical Schools (very limited availability).

BCM now requires a background check (not necessary for an international student, who enters the U.S. on an F-1 visa) for visiting students.

YOUR SCHOOL OFFICIAL MUST CERTIFY (SEE APPLICATION FORM) THAT YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR INSTITUTION'S BACKGROUND CHECK BEFORE YOUR ELEECTIVE WILL BE APPROVED.

International Students Please Note: B-1/B-2 visa IS NOT accepted for participation in the Visiting Medical Student Elective Program at Baylor College of Medicine. Students must enter the U.S. with either the F-1 student visa (primary choice) or J-1 student visa issued by BCM to participate in BCM's Visiting Medical Student Elective Program. Only one (1) month of elective training is available in this program. Additional months will not be authorized.

For an authorization number, please contact the program by e-mail at: visitingmed@bcm.edu.

Registration for an elective at Baylor is handled by the Office of the Registrar. It is only through this process that a visiting medical student can participate in Baylor's elective offerings.

In order to do elective work at BCM, students must:

  1. Contact the Office of the Registrar by e-mail to secure an authorization number prior to submission of an application for elective participation.
  2. Be in their final year of medical school.
  3. Submit a complete application packet prior to application deadline.
  4. Enclose a copy of a picture identification with application.
  5. Meet the prerequisites for each elective. For most clinical electives this means that you must have completed the clinical core rotation in that discipline prior to enrolling in the elective. A certified transcript must accompany the application.
  6. Be covered by malpractice insurance. You must show coverage by providing us with certification from your own institution that you are covered while taking an elective at Baylor. You may purchase malpractice insurance upon arrival. Baylor offers malpractice insurance coverage at a one-time fee of $12 (non-refundable). The Cashier's Office will accept cash, cashier's check, traveler's check and money orders.
  7. Have evidence of personal health coverage certified by your dean, or by copy of your health policy demonstrating coverage during the time you are taking an elective at Baylor. All international students (EXCEPT those whose resident status is U.S. citizen) will be required to purchase Baylor's health insurance - Aetna Student Health. The current individual rate for students is $211 per month.
  8. Show proof of immunizations/serologic confirmation. Students must be currently immunized against Tetanus/Diphtheria, Measles [Rubeola], Rubella, Mumps, Polio, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Varicella [Chicken Pox]. All foreign documentation must be translated into English.
  9. Have viewed the most recent OSHA film on Occupational Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens. Written confirmation from your medical school is required, otherwise, you will be required to view the video when you arrive at Baylor. Proof of HIPPA training is also required. If not provided, an online training session is required before your elective assignment may begin.
  10. Send the non-refundable application fee and the monthly fee payment form to the separate address provided on the form. CASH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL ONLY DELAY THE PROCESSING OF YOUR APPLICATION. Once an authorization number is released to the student and the application received, the application fee is non-refundable.

Every effort will be made to place the student in the elective departments requested, however the student should provide alternatives from several departments to assist with placement.
