BCM Recycles!

Baylor College of Medicine's commitment to recycling and sustainability continues to gain momentum. Students, trainees, faculty and staff alike are joining forces and incorporating a range of conservation practices to help create a more sustainable environment. Check out some ways to reduce your environmental footprint.

In 1989, BCM initiated its first water recycling program. Today, BCM Recycles!, a college-wide initiative, is making significant impact, exceeding the program's 2007 results.

See our report card for 2009:

  • Paper and cardboard recycled – 704,060 pounds or 352.03 tons (12.3% increase)
  • Water recycled – 35,934,725 gallons (18.46% increase)
  • Metal recycled – 105,000 pounds or 53.5 tons (8.7% increase)
  • Plastic recycled – 3,400 pounds or 1.70 tons (1.5% increase)
  • Campus electrical consumption reduced by 6,359,847 KWH (4.63% reduction)
  • Campus natural gas consumption reduced by 9,337 MMBTU (5.2% reduction)

In addition to the college, Baylor College of Medicine collects paper products from Ben Taub Hospital, Baylor Clinic, Children's Nutrition Research Center, The Faculty Center, The Feigin Center, the McGovern Campus, the BCM Medical Building, Texas Woman's University, and the Travis Building/Hilton Hotel.
