Houston Women's Psychiatry
Association of Women Psychiatrists, Local Branch
With departmental support from Stuart Yudofsky, M.D., James Lomax, M.D., and Pedro Ruiz, M.D., HWP was formed by psychiatry faculty members and residents of Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston (UTHSC) and private practitioners. This initiative was launched to improve the professional and personal development of female psychiatric trainees and psychiatrists, and to address work-life-balance issues for all psychiatrists and their families. Events are held quarterly and are organized by resident leaders and faculty who provide support and mentorship.
Seeking opportunities for mentorship that extends beyond their respective institutions, the HWP group hosted events to include psychiatrists who practice in the greater Houston area. This extension continued as discussions with the Association of Women Psychiatrists leadership (former and current presidents Mary Kay Smith, M.D. and Tana A. Grady-Weliky, M.D.). During the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting in May 2007, the AWP designated HWP to be their inaugural local chapter!
