Treating Facial and Leg Veins with the SmartEpil 1064
We use the SmartEpil, a class 4 ND:YAG laser, to treat facial and leg veins (spider veins).
- The SmartEpil is a class 4 ND:YAG laser. The wavelength of this laser is 1064, which is the gold standard in treating larger deeper reticular veins of the leg region. The SmartEpil automatically selects the proper pulse duration based on energy setting to deliver the best treatment with the least amount of time.
- Typically, one to two sessions are required for clearance on the face. Two to three sessions are generally required for the leg areas.
- The cost of spider vein treatments is generally around $400 for a 20-minute session. (190 being AAI's standard fee.) For times lasting longer than 20 minutes, AAI will charge an additional $25 for every 5-minute set beyond this time.)
- Spider vein treatment can be described as moderately painful. The use of topical or local anesthetics is generally not recommended.
- After treatment, the treated area will look red, and the veins may appear darker than before treatment. Depending on the area of the body, this effect can last from one day to over a month.
- Support stockings are recommended for approximately three days after treatment, however it is not required.
- After treatment, patients should avoid the following for a period of 72 hours: exercising, taking aspirin, alcohol, hot baths or whirlpools, and any medication that may thin your blood. The general rule of thumb is: if it makes your heart work harder or your blood thinner, it should be avoided.
- The SmartEpil works by delivering a precise amount of energy (either 100-125 J/cm2 for the face or 150-200 J/cm2 for leg areas) to the targeted vessel bypassing the surrounding skin, which in turn will cause the blood within the vessel to clot. Once the clotting has occurred, the vessel will slowly be absorbed by the body.
