Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship

Requirements for Fellowship Candidacy

• Completion of an ACGME accredited residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), or 
  Completion of separate ACGME accredited residencies in Pediatrics and PMR.
• American Board of PM&R certification or eligibility.
• Successful completion and passing of USMLE Step I, II, and III. 

Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship is accredited for a total of four (4) fellow positions. Up to two positions may be offered to select candidates each year who have met the above qualifications. Funding for this position is through Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH).

• Up to $2,500 educational allowance that may be used for board examination fees, books, and other educational materials

Clinical Training Sites and Experiences

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) is a 16-bed CARF-accredited pediatric rehabilitation unit located on the 12th floor of West Tower at Texas Children’s Hospital and can expand to accommodate up to 20 patients. The IRU provides comprehensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation care for children with a wide range of acquired and congenital conditions, utilizing state-of-the-art therapies to maximize function, independence, and quality of life.

Fellows also participate in a robust inpatient rehabilitation consult service, working closely with medical and surgical teams throughout the hospital to evaluate rehabilitation needs, guide post-acute care planning, and optimize functional outcomes.

Outpatient Rehabilitation and Multidisciplinary Clinics

Fellows gain extensive experience in outpatient pediatric rehabilitation through a variety of specialty and multidisciplinary clinics, including:

• Cerebral Palsy Clinic
• Spasticity Clinic
• Spina Bifida Clinic
• Muscular Dystrophy Clinic
• Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Clinic
• Limb Difference Clinic
• Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic
• Angelman Syndrome Clinic
• General Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic
• Motion Analysis Laboratory (Texas Children’s Hospital - The Woodlands)

Additional longitudinal and procedural experiences include:

• PRM Fellow Continuity Clinic (2nd and 4th Fridays of each month when not assigned to inpatient or consult services)
• Chemodenervation and neurolysis procedures, including botulinum toxin and phenol injections
• Electrodiagnostic studies (EMG/NCS)
• Intrathecal baclofen pump management

This diverse clinical experience provides fellows with broad exposure to the full spectrum of pediatric rehabilitation medicine across inpatient, consultative, outpatient, procedural, and multidisciplinary settings.

Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine is inherently collaborative, and fellows train closely with specialists in neurosurgery, orthopedics, developmental pediatrics, neurocritical care, hospital medicine, neuropsychology, sports medicine, chronic pain, prosthetics and orthotics, complex care, and equipment clinics. Elective rotations offer additional opportunities to tailor training to individual interests and career goals. This multidisciplinary experience prepares fellows to provide comprehensive care and lead interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams.

Fellows participate in a shared call schedule with PM&R residents rotating on service. Call is assigned in one-week blocks and is primarily home-based, with the exception of weekend in-house rounding on inpatient rehabilitation and consult patients. Attending physician support is always available. Fellows typically take 6 to 8 weeks of call annually.

The site for all assignments is Texas Children's Hospital.

Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activities throughout training, which may include clinical research, educational scholarship, quality improvement initiatives, or other academic projects. Fellows are encouraged to develop and complete an original research project, including study design, implementation, data analysis, presentation, and manuscript preparation.

Dedicated research time is incorporated into the fellowship curriculum, and each fellow is paired with a faculty mentor based on their academic interests. Fellows are also required to complete at least one quality improvement project during their training.

Additional research education opportunities are available through Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. Fellows may elect to enroll in the Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation course offered through the BCM Clinical Scientist Training Program, which provides instruction in research methods, study design, and biostatistics. Fellows are also encouraged to participate in educational and scholarly programming offered through Texas Children’s Fellows’ College.
