The following additional benefits are provided by the Department of Pediatrics, Texas Children's Hospital or Ben Taub Hospital:
- Five-day holiday: In addition to the paid vacations provided as part of the program, the Department of Pediatrics allows each house officer a five-day holiday with pay each year, as assigned by the chief resident.
- Professional meeting: Each house officer is provided the time and opportunity to attend a professional meeting every year. Interns may attend a two-day meeting within the Tri-State area, and residents may attend a five-day meeting within the continental United States. The time off provided for this activity is, of course, in addition to vacation time. If the house officer chooses not to attend a professional meeting, a stipend ($450 for interns and $750 for residents), to purchase medical books or journals is available.
- Interest-free loans: Interest-free short- and long-term loans are available for emergency financial assistance. Repayment of short-term loans should start within 90 days and be completed within one year. Repayment of long-term loans begins five years after receipt of the loan.
- Free institutional permit: Although a Texas state medical license is not required for residency or fellowship training in Texas, those without a full medical license must obtain a Texas Physician In Training permit. The fee for training permits is reimbursed by the Department of Pediatrics.
- Intern orientation, including:
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Orientation lectures
- Computer orientation
- Hospital orientation
- Intern retreat: A retreat for interns is held in October at a resort area near Houston. The retreat runs from Friday evening through noon Sunday and is a wonderful opportunity for the interns to get to know each other and a number of the key pediatric faculty. The retreat includes educational activities as well as ample opportunity to enjoy the resort's recreational facilities.
- Meal vouchers: Texas Children's and Ben Taub provide meal vouchers for residents on call.
- Social functions: A variety of other social functions, including a welcome party for interns and a house staff graduation banquet in June, are hosted by the department. Each month a birthday dinner is hosted by our chair, Dr. Mark Kline for house officers whose birthdays fall in that month. Additionally, the house staff themselves arrange a variety of social events throughout the year. These include sporting events and competitions as well as holiday parties.
- Tickets to cultural and sporting events: The Department of Pediatrics has season tickets to all major cultural and sporting events (opera, symphony, ballet, theater, baseball, basketball, etc.). These tickets are distributed to residents by lottery. The total number of tickets is such that each house officer usually gets tickets to at least one event during the year.
- Resident's Lounge: Texas Children's Hospital provides a lounge for residents. Amenities include a large screen television, a DVD player, multiple computer work stations, a full kitchen and exercise equipment.
