Rotations for Pediatric Residents


First Year (PL-I)

Pediatric Inpatient (Texas Children's Hospital) 6 months
Pediatric Ward including ICU (Ben Taub General Hospital) 1 month
Clinics & ER (Ben Taub) 2 months
Developmental & Behavioral Clinics 1 month
Normal Newborn (Ben Taub) 1 month
Neonatology (Ben Taub) 1 month
Pediatrics 101* 2 weeks

*Pediatrics 101 is an intern rotation with no clinical duties and no call. A variety of topics (including teaching skills, medical ethics, health care financing, impact of chronic illness on families, domestic violence, and communication skills) are covered in small group interactive sessions.

Second Year (PL-II)

Supervising Resident, inpatient (Texas Children's) 1 month
Pediatric Cardiology 1 month
Pediatric Neurology 1 month
Neonatology Level 2 & ICU (Texas Children's) 2 months
Adolescent Medicine 1 month
Clinics & ER (Texas Children's & Ben Taub) 2-4 months
Electives 2 months

Third Year (PL-III)

Supervising Resident, inpatient (Ben Taub) 1 month
Pediatric ICU (Texas Children's) 1 month
Clinics & ER (Texas Children's & Ben Taub) 4-5 months
Supervising Resident, Neonatology (Ben Taub) 1-2 months
Electives 4 months
Pedi 301* 1 month

*This multifaceted course includes sessions devoted to quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, teaching, advocacy and clinical experience in selected outpatient subspecialty clinics.

Average total time on certain services

Neonatology (excluding normal newborn) 4 months
Pediatric Intensive Care 2 months
Maximum total of neonatology plus PICU 6 months
Electives** 6 months
Total Ambulatory Experience 50%
** One elective at either the PL-II or PL-III level must be a primary care ambulatory experience.
Continuity Clinic - runs longitudinally and meets one half day per week for all three years.
