A Message from the Director

Mark A. Ward, M.D.

The Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine has a proud tradition of providing outstanding training for individuals interested in all aspects of child care, including primary care, subspecialty care, research, advocacy, and public health. Superior training is facilitated by the exceptional physical plant at BCM, but the dedication and excellence of the BCM pediatric family, including students, residents, fellows, and faculty, are ultimately responsible for the phenomenal success of the program.

In order to perpetuate the tradition, the Pediatric Residency Training Program seeks to attract the best possible candidates from throughout the nation and world. We are looking for individuals able to function in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Despite our size, in fact because of it, team-oriented individuals interested in collaborating with others like themselves are those most likely to thrive. We pride ourselves on the closeness of our house staff and cultivate a community atmosphere. We support our trainees as part of the BCM pediatric family while fostering their development as future pediatric leaders.

Because the BCM pediatric residency occurs in both a large, free-standing tertiary care children’s hospital and a general county hospital, residents provide care for an extraordinarily diverse group of children. That diversity is expressed in terms of race and ethnicity, type and complexity of health problems, and social and economic status. Virtually every type of medical challenge, from the common cold to organ transplantation and rare genetic problems, will be encountered during training at BCM. Residents are supervised by our full-time faculty comprised of generalists and subspecialists from every area of pediatrics. Community pediatricians also continue to play an important role in the training of our residents, particularly with respect to primary care general pediatrics.

If facing the challenges of residency training in the company of a group of dedicated colleagues and mentors appeals to you, we invite you to let us show you what we have to offer at BCM.
