Residency Program in Global Child Health
Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital are excited to announce a new initiative in the pediatric residency program. The Residency Program in Global Child Health is designed to prepare trainees for leadership positions in global pediatric health care, pediatric education and training, clinical research and child advocacy. The key elements of the program will include:
Duration of training - four years
Special global health educational experiences in United States
- Monthly seminars on global health
- Semi-annual Grand Rounds presentation on global health
- Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine – American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene approved course in travel and tropical medicine (resulting in eligibility to sit for certification examination)
Extensive international experience in one 12-month block or two 6-month blocks integrated throughout the four years of training, or as a 12-month block in the fourth year:
Option 1 (one 12-month block)
- Year 1: Houston-Houston
- Year 2: Houston-Africa
- Year 3: Africa-Houston
- Year 4: Houston-Houston
Option 2 (two 6-month blocks)
- Year 1: Houston-Houston
- Year 2: Houston-Africa
- Year 3: Houston-Houston
- Year 4: Africa-Houston
Option 3 (one 12-month block in year four)
- Year 1: Houston-Houston
- Year 2: Houston-Houston
- Year 3: Houston-Houston
- Year 4: Africa-Africa
Experience in Africa includes participation in the care of children with a variety of medical problems, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, malnutrition, tuberculosis and cancer.
Capstone project in global health related area
- Under mentorship of a faculty member
- Presentation at national meeting and/or publication in peer-reviewed journal
We are awaiting final program approval from the Pediatric Residency Review Committee, but will be interviewing applicants in anticipation of a July 2010 start date.
Prospective trainees will apply to the program through the National Residency Matching Program, in the same manner that individuals apply to the standard BCM/Texas Children's pediatric residency program.
