Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is a specialized type of intensive care unit of 16 beds that is fully dedicated to critically-ill children and young adults with congenital or acquired cardiac disease. The physicians and nurses as well as the support staff of respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and nursing support personnel number over 100 and are all well trained in cardiac intensive care and are fully dedicated to taking care of children with heart disease in the intensive care setting.
The CvICU has a multitude of research projects ongoing with a focus on newer modalities of therapy, including new medications and equipment. The CvICU here at the Heart Center at Texas Children’s Hospital is also a clinical arena with senior fellowship training as well as many visiting physicians and nurses from all over the world, as this unit is now recognized as one of the leading units for research and patient care. It is the ideal intensive care unit to take care of children who demand the highest level of intensive care after their complex cardiac surgery or interventional catheterization. Lastly, the CvICU here at Texas Children’s is also the host institution for the international symposia on pediatric cardiac intensive care held biannually. |
