Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Training Program Banner

Applicant Qualifications:

Applicants must successfully complete a Pediatric Residency Training Program and be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics. Board certification in Pediatrics is a requirement for certification in Pediatric Cardiology by the ABP. In special circumstances, applicants with outstanding past performance and future potential from outside the United States and Canada who have successfully completed the equivalent Pediatric training pathway in their country will be given consideration.

General Information:

While a Texas medical license is not required, full licensure is recommended. At a minimum, fellows must obtain a Physicians In Training permit through the Texas Medical Board.  Application materials are available at: http://www.tmb.state.tx.us/default.php

Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools must fulfill the requirements of the Health Professions Educational Assistance Act of 1976 (PL 94-494), including passing the USMLE and all other applicable requirements. All postdoctoral fellows, for whom visa documents are requested, will be required to pay a processing fee. For any questions regarding FMS requirements please contact the Baylor International Services Office direct at 713-798-4604.

The Section of Pediatric Cardiology is a participant in the National Residency Matching Program and will follow the schedule of dates published by the NRMP. Results of the match for fellows who will begin training in July, 2009 are expected to be released in June, 2008.

Advanced Training Opportunities:

In addition to the three - year ACGME approved pediatric cardiology fellowship, there are advanced training opportunities that are designed to follow the successful completion of a pediatric cardiologist. These fellowships are not sanctioned by the ACGME, however, they are approved by the Texas Medical Board.

  • Cardiac Electrophysiology
  • Critical Care Cardiology
  • Advanced Cardiac Imaging
  • Interventional Cardiac Catheterization


Pending Fourth - Year Training Programs:

The following programs are being considered:

  • Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy, and Transplant
  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease

How to Apply:

Typically, applicants for the Pediatric Cardiology fellowship are invited to interview in January, February, March, and April in their second year of pediatric residency. In other words, interviews commence about 18 months ahead of entry into fellowship. Applications are accepted from September to March of the same academic year. It is important that all application materials, including transcripts and letters of recommendation be received in Houston allowing complete review of the application prior to issuing an invitation to interview.  All submitted applications should be typed, completely filled out and include a recent photograph in the upper right hand corner.

All applications will be reviewed and considered by Dr. Steven R. Neish, Fellowship Program Director only after the following documents are submitted:

Required Documents:

  • Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Training Program Application(see link below)
  • A current copy of your Curriculum Vitae.
  • A Personal Statement.
  • Four letters of recommendation (one from Residency Program Director) sent separately from physicians or research investigators who have been involved in the applicant’s previous training. (All letters should be addressed to Steven R. Neish, MD, SM, Director, Fellowship Training Programs; see exceptions below).


Fourth – Year Subspecialty Applicants address letters as follows:

  • EP – Dr. Richard A. Friedman, M.D., M.B.A., Director, Electrophysiology
  • CVICU - Dr. David P. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Cardiovascular Intensive Care
  • Echo - Dr. Nancy A. Ayres, M.D., Director, Non – Invasive Imaging
  • Cath - Dr. Frank Ing, M.D., Director, Cardiac Cath Lab
  • Picture ID - driver’s license or passport (front and back copy)
  • Three true copies (notarized) of medical school diploma or Dean’s verification of graduation (Dean’s verification must be an original document, copies are not acceptable).
  • A current copy of one of the following: ACLS, ATLS, BLS, or PALS healthcare provider card (front and back)
  • Original Medical School Transcript
  • For Foreign Medical Graduates: True copy (notarized) of ECFMG certificate (required for foreign graduates-outside of the US and Canada)
