The Section of Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine is composed of two programs, the Adolescent Medicine Program and the Sports Medicine Program. Each program has specific goals for training medical personnel and for providing services to the adolescent and young adult populations.
Adolescent Medicine Program
The Adolescent Medicine Program provides interdisciplinary instruction for medical students, residents, adolescent medicine fellows, and graduate and post-graduate students in nursing, nutrition, social work, psychology, and public health. Interdisciplinary faculty with expertise in adolescent medicine and adolescent health provides training in the application of primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment strategies for clinical and public health problems in adolescents and young adults.
The program:
- Seeks to advance the knowledge of adolescent health problems through research and other scholarly work
- Serves as an advocate for adolescent health issues locally, regionally, and nationally
- Educates youth and families regarding information and behaviors that are associated with improved health outcomes
Sports Medicine Program
The Sports Medicine Program provides training in primary care sports medicine to medical students, residents, and sports medicine fellows.
The program includes:
- Clinical teaching about sports medicine programs for children, adolescents, and adults
- Primary research and other scholarly work to advance the knowledge and practice in sports medicine
- Continuing medical education to improve knowledge and skills of practicing physicians
- Instruction for patients to promote lifestyles that include exercise and sports participation for people of all ages, including those with special health care needs
