Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine

The Baylor College of Medicine Section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine was created July 1, 2010 from the existing Faculty Inpatient Service at BCM, Texas Children's Hospital. The Faculty Inpatient Service was started 10 years ago by the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine to answer a need for inpatient attending coverage for hospitalized patients at Texas Children's.

Pediatric hospital medicine is a new and rapidly evolving field. We are proud to be at the forefront of this movement with representation on the national level. Our fellowship in pediatric hospital medicine seeks to develop leaders who can contribute significantly through research, quality, administrative and educational work.

Currently, PHM provides coverage for more than 300 community physicians and cares for more than two thirds of all unassigned patients admitted. PHM is available for pediatric consults for other services and to help provide coverage to the Texas Children's observation unit. PHM offers efficient, high-quality inpatient pediatric care. A PHM provider is in-house 24 hours, 7 days a week. Our faculty are active in quality improvement and research throughout the hospital in order to continuously improve the care we provide our patients.

PHM faculty are the primary educators of the BCM pediatric residents and medical students in general inpatient pediatrics. Many of our faculty are involved with education initiatives to improve the experiences of our learners. We also participate in education endeavors for ancillary staff, other faculty, and community physicians. Members of our section have developed and continue to improve a wonderful faculty development curriculum.
