Residency Program

General Information

The Department of Pathology conducts a four year, fully accredited, residency program with 4-6 PGY-1 level positions available each year. There are a total of 28 residency and fellow positions. Our first year positions are filled through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) only. Trainees typically pursue a course leading to certification in both anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP). Facilities and supervision are provided for those interested in an academic career with opportunities for research. We offer subspecialty training in cytopathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, molecular pathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, pulmonary pathology, surgical pathology, and renal pathology.

The program offers a diverse clinical experience with rotations at Ben Taub General Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Texas Children's Hospital, and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. In addition a variety of cases from an associated community pathology practice are available. All training facilities are located within the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Each year offers unique training opportunities and graduated levels of responsibility.

Residents are encouraged to participate in local and regional Pathology organizations including the Texas Society of Pathologists and Houston Society of Clinical Pathologists, as well as national organizations such as USCAP, CAP, and ASCP.

Stipends and benefits can be found in Baylor's Residency Training brochure. Stipend levels are at the national average, but Houston's cost of living ranks among the lowest of metropolitan areas in the U.S. Baylor residents frequently own homes or condominiums, and a large number of apartments in all price ranges are available within minutes of the medical center. Additionally, Houston has a variety of wonderful entertainment, excellent dining and outdoor activities.

House staff at postgraduate levels II and above are entitled to three weeks annual vacation, while residents at level I receive two weeks. All house staff have available to them two weeks of paid sick leave and three days of paid personal leave each year. Unused sick leave can be carried forward and used in subsequent years. House staff may be eligible to take sick leave, paternity leave, and unpaid leave of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The Department provides a yearly book stipend of $600. The department will also pay for three in-state conferences per year, which includes conference registration, one night hotel, travel, and a per-diem. With several major academic centers in Texas, these in-state meetings allow the residents to network with pathologists and residents from around the state. The department will pay for residents to attend conferences at a national level if they are presenting research.
