Research Interests:

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity among very low birth weight infants. The etiology and pathophysiology of this devastating disease are still poorly understood.  Prematurity, genetic predisposition, gastrointestinal bacterial colonization, and introduction of enteral feeding have been suggested as contributors of the disease process.
Enteral feeding and intestinal colonization are two factors that can be potentially manipulated. Colonization by pathogenic bacteria among hospitalized preterm infants has been observed and believed to play a major role in the pathogenesis of NEC. On the other hand, use of breast milk has been consistently shown to lower the incidence of NEC. My research interest is focused on the development and shifts in intestinal microbiota of hospitalized preterm infants and how different types of enteral feeding influence these changes.  In addition, there is a renewed interest in the use of probiotics among preterm infants. Recent randomized trials have shown a decrease in the incidence, mortality and morbidity associated with NEC with the use of probiotics.

Education/Background:

I obtained my B.S. in biology at Ateneo De Manila University in the Philippines. I obtained my M.D. at University of the East- Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center.  After medical school I did residency in Pediatrics at Makati Medical Center and stayed an additional year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. I came to the United Stated to pursue a fellowship in Neonatology. I did another residency at the Children’s Hospital at The Cleveland Clinic prior to moving to Houston to do my training in Neonatology.
