Congratulations to Thomas M. Wheeler, M.D.


Thomas Wheeler, M.D., Chair, Class of 1977, was the recipient of the Distinguished BCM Alumnus, Medical School , Award, during the Annual BCM Alumni Association Reunion, held over the weekend of April 17-19 th .  He also presented at the symposium “Clinical Pathology Associations in Prostate Cancer”.  Join us in congratulating Dr. Wheeler on this honor!

 

 

 


YTAC Awards Drs. Martin M. Matzuk, M.D., Ph.D. and Matthew Anderson, M.D., Ph.D.

Young Texans Against Cancer (YTAC) presented Martin M. Matzuk, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Pathology, and Matt Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, OB/GYN, a check for $100,000 for ovarian cancer research on Thursday, November 20th, at The Remington at the St. Regis.  These funds will be used to continue to support the development of the Program in Ovarian Cancer.  Congratulations to Drs. Matzuk and Anderson!

 

 

 


Richard Sifers, Ph.D. Associate Professor awarded the Fulbright & Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award - Teaching and Evaluation Fall 2008 and will be inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Educators

Rick Sifers, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Pathology, was the announced on December 05th as the recipient of t he Fulbright & Jaworski L. L. P. Faculty Excellence Award (in the category of Teaching and Evaluation) recognizes distinguished educators for their exemplary teaching contributions, mentoring and achievements (both locally and internationally).  He taught in both the medical and graduate schools at BCM and serve as a course co-director in the latter.  The award includes a 5 year membership in the Academy of Distinguished Educators and he will be inducted as a member at a luncheon on January 23rd, 2009.  In recent years, Dr. Sifers received awards as co-director for the best graduate course and best lecturer (for two consecutive years) in the BCM graduate school's core curriculum.  Please join us in congratulating him on the well deserved honors!

 


Cooper Lab Members Receive External Funding & Interviewed in Journal of Cell Biology

Muge Kuyumcu-Martinez, Ph.D., Instructor, Pathology, received a Development Award funded by the American Heart Association for four years - this grant funds the transition to a faculty position.

 

 



Auinash Kalsotra, Ph.D., Postdoc, received two years of funding from the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation.

 

 

 

Andrea Ladd, former  Postdoc,  was interviewed by the Journal of Cell Biology talking about her work and the beginnings of the work in  Dr. Tom Cooper's  lab. (Journal of Cell Biology, Vol. 183, No. 6, 966-96; http://jcb.rupress.org/cgi/content/short/183/6/966?rss=1 ) She now has her own lab at the Cleveland Clinic Research Institute .

Jun Teruya, M.D., DSc. has been awarded The Faculty Education Award of Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Center

Jun Teruya, M.D., D.Sc., Associate Professor, Pathology, received the Faculty Education Award of TCH Cancer Center at the Fellow's Graduation Ceremony, on Thursday, June 26th.

This award is given to a faculty member who made a significant contribution to the educational objectives of his Texas Children's Cancer Center and Hematology service during the preceeding academic year. Please join us in extending congratulations to Dr. Teruya on this well deserved award.


James Versalovic, M.D., Ph.D. has been appointed as the new Chief of Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital

From the Office of the Chair: Special Announcement June 11, 2008:

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Residents:

I am pleased to announce that James Versalovic, M.D., Ph.D. has been appointed as the new Chief of Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital, with his appointment to be effective April 2009.

Dr. Versalovic received his M.D. with honors at Baylor College of Medicine in 1995 and his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine in 1994. He pursued clinical pathology residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School , in addition to postdoctoral fellowship training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is board-certified in clinical pathology, molecular diagnostics, and molecular genetic pathology. Since 2001, Dr. Versalovic has served as Director of the Microbiology Laboratories, and, in 2006, he became Director of the Division of Molecular Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital. He also serves as Associate Professor of Pathology, Molecular and Human Genetics, and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is Co-Director of the Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) training program at Baylor, and Co-Director of the Functional Genomics Core of the Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center . Jim is Editor-in-Chief of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology and Editor of Therapeutic Microbiology: Probiotics and Related Strategies. He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics and Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine . As a Principal Investigator, his primary research interests include probiotics, medical and molecular microbiology, molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases, the human microbiome, innate immunity, and digestive diseases (especially inflammatory bowel disease). He has received the Lansky Award as a national leader in pathology under the age of 45 from the College of American Pathologists Foundation and the BioGaia Ivan Casas Probiotics Research Award.

Dr. Milton Finegold will continue in his current role as Chief of Pathology until April, leading the transition until Dr. Versalovic takes on the responsibilities of that position. Milton will remain a full-time member of the department, continuing to direct the Morphology Core of the Digestive Disease Center , participating in diagnostic pathology services and education at TCH, and providing expertise in the area of liver disease in children. 

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Versalovic on his new role.   I also express our gratitude to Dr. Finegold for his continued support and there will be opportunities to recognize Dr. Finegold's for his outstanding leadership as Chief of Pathology during the transition.


The Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Award for Excellence in Education awarded to Vicky Gresik, M.D.

Vicky Gresik M.D., Professor, Pathology and Pediatrics, was selected as outstanding educators for 2008.  Each of these awardees has excellent teaching skills and is to be commended for their dedication to the training of our students. 

The Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education award will be presented at noon, Wednesday, April 30, in Cullen Auditorium. Following the awards presentation, David C. Leach, M.D., retired chief executive officer of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, will present the 2008 Education Awards Lecture. Dr. Leach is a nationally and internationally known educator who has led the way toward establishing competency-based education across the continuum of medical training.


Dolores Lopez-Terrada, M.D., Ph.D. awarded the Fulbright & Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award - Education Leadership Fall 2007

Dr. Alice Chen Receives CAGT Faculty Teaching Award

Alice Chen, M.D., Ph.D. , assistant professor,  received the "Faculty Teaching Award" for the Alkek location of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at the Annual CAGT Conference held on Nov. 5th and 6th, 2007.  Members of the research labs vote on their work experience with each faculty member throughout the year.   Our congratulations to Dr. Chen on this honor!

 

 


Dr. Rick Sifers Receives 8-Stranded Beta-Barrel Jelly Roll "Best Lecturer" award

The "Best Lecturer" award represents one of the 8-Stranded Beta-Barrel Jelly Roll awards given to teachers of the core curriculum for the BCM Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.  Members of the first year class (from the previous year) vote for the three best lecturers that they had.  The 2007 Awardee is Rick Sifers, PhD, associate professor.  He taught the following classes "Organization of the Cell" and "Structure of Macromolecules" and is also a co-director of the first class.  Our congratulations to Dr. Sifers on this well deserved award!

 


Dr. Megan Dishop Receives Pediatric Excellence in Teaching Award

Mark Ward, director of the pediatric residency program, announced the first ever award by the Department of Pediatrics for Excellence in Teaching to a non-pediatrician at the Symposium on Pediatric Lung Disease was held on Friday, November 16th, in honor of Dr. Claire Langston.   The recipient for 2007 is Megan Dishop, M.D., assistant professor in Pathology.  The nominations came from pediatric faculty, fellows, and house staff.  This wonderful recognition was especially timely in view of the presence in the TCH auditorium of the distinguished speakers on lung development and disease in children with whom Drs. Langston and Dishop are collaborating.  Please congratulate Dr. Dishop on this honor.

 


Congratulations to Dr. James Versalovic

Dr. James Versalovic, associate professor of Pathology based at Texas Children's Hospital, has received the inaugural BioGaia Ivan Casas Probiotics Award. BioGaia AB is a commercial venture working to translate this relatively new science of probiotics into products for human and animal health. The award was presented to Dr. Versalovic "in recognition of his pioneering work in the study of the genome and gene expression in L. reuteri and his quest to define the mechanisms of action of this probiotic." He was also acknowledged for "his significant contributions to the advancement of probiotic research around the world."


Congratulations to Drs. Kathryn Pepple and Angshumoy Roy

The Milton J. Finegold Graduate Student Achievement Award 2006 was presented to Kathryn L. Pepple, M.D., Ph.D., (Graeme Mardon, Ph.D., mentor) and Angshumoy Roy, M.D., Ph.D., (Martin M. Matzuk, M.D., Ph.D., mentor) on Tuesday, September 25th. The award honors these individuals as the most outstanding graduate student who completed his/her dissertation with a faculty member of the Department of Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine. Please join us in congratulating these honorees on the well deserved award.
