The 8th Annual Pathology Compliance and Coding Seminar
Thursday, October 26, 2006
Baylor College of Medicine
Alkek Auditorium N315
One Baylor Plaza, Houston, Texas
Activity Director: Thomas M. Wheeler, MD
Activity Coordinators: Pamela S. Younes, MHS; LaShaune Dejean; Beverly A. Osterloh
Needs
Most CPT coding and compliance training is not directed to pathologists, but to general practitioners, surgeons, and other specialists, because not very many people understand laboratory billing. Coders and pathologists' assistants are receiving some ongoing training, yet the pathologists and residents are not, and are not always complying with the annual training required. Additionally, the offerings made at pathology professional meetings do not provide a standard that can be applied to the group.
This two-hour program will foster a change. All the pathologists will receive the same information, at the same time, without leaving their practice. The coders will also hear the same information and more consistent billing will be the end result.
Target Audience
Pathologists, fellows, residents, and other health care professionals in the field of pathology.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Model Compliance Plan for Clinical Laboratories, and its impact on the pathology laboratory
- Describe how HIPAA has changed clinical laboratory work practices
- Select the appropriate CPT code for a surgical pathology, cytology, or clinical case
- Discuss why a particular CPT code was chosen
