DeBakey Research Awards
I am very pleased to announce the BCM researchers who are the recipients of the 2006 Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Excellence in Research Awards. Each award winner has set new standards in the understanding of cellular activities and opened the door for new treatments of disease. Congratulations to Xin-Hua Feng, Ph.D., associate professor of surgery; Francesco DeMayo, Ph.D., professor of molecular and cellular biology; Daniel Medina, Ph.D., professor of molecular and cellular biology; and Rongfu Wang, Ph.D., professor in the BCM Center for Cell and Gene Therapy and the department of Pathology. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------BCM, Paraguay Ministry of Health Sign Agreement
BCM has signed an agreement with the Paraguayan Ministry of Health. Through the agreement, BCM faculty will travel to Paraguay and provide didactic and clinical teaching to physicians. A select number of Paraguayan physicians, in various specialties, will to come to Houston for 3-6 month periods of training as clinical observers. Baylor was represented by Stephen Spann, M.D., professor and chair of Family Medicine & Community Medicine, and Gustavo Ayala, M.D., professor of Pathology, who is from Paraguay and is honorary Paraguayan consul in Houston. This is another excellent example of the College's work to enhance medical care in other countries.

BCM Receives Tumor Microenvironment Network U54 Grant
BCM researchers have been awarded a $2,500,000 multidisciplinary 5-year grant entitled "Co-Evolution of the Reactive Microenvironment in Prostate Cancer Progression" as part of the Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN) established this year by the NIH National Cancer Institute. Dr. David R. Rowley, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology is the principal investigator. Dr. Gustavo Ayala and Dr. Michael Ittmann, both professors of Pathology, are co-investigators. The TMEN was established this year and will fund nine extramural centers that will collectively address the role of the tumor microenvironment in cancer progression.
25 years into the AIDS epidemic
Friends and collaborators,
At the bottom of is e-mail is an article on me from this morning's Houston Chronicle.
If you would like to help in the war against AIDS, now in its 25th year, consider sponsoring me in "Braking the Cycle". It is a 275 mile bike ride from Gettysburg, PA to Manhattan, and benefits a New York City non-profit organization that provides services to persons with or affected by HIV/AIDS. I will be covering my own expenses for this event but a need to raise at least $3500 in donations to participate in the ride. You can help me fight HIV/AIDS by going to www.brakingthecycle.org and making a tax-deductible contribution in my name: Larry Teeter #137. If you prefer not to donate via the web, a flyer and a donation form are available at http://home.swbell.net/larathon/lteeterEflyer.pdf
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your support!
Larry D. Teeter, Ph.D.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/run/3948866.htmlOn behalf of the residency committee:
We are pleased to announce that Jennifer Rushton, MD and Erika Fong, MD has been named Chief Residents for the upcoming 2006-2007 academic year. Please join us in congratulating them and giving them your support throughout the upcoming year.
Please find attached a file containing the Baylor Licensing Group's invention disclosure form. As noted by Lisa Beveridge, this form should be used to report all inventions made by Baylor faculty. As a reminder, an invention can be anything, whether patentable or not, that could be licensed to a company. These possibilities include therapeutics, devices, diagnostics, clones, cell lines, tissues, or mice, to name a few. The form includes areas for signatures of each contributor and the chairman of the department(s). Please don't hesitate to call Lisa Beveridge directly if you have any questions (713-798-6821; beveridge@bcm.tmc.edu).

The 6th Annual Pathology Medical Malpractice Seminar
CANCELLED
Due to the availability of a new training module on the Baylor Intranet (see link below and message from Brenda Hart, J.D.), the upcoming Medical Malpractice seminar scheduled for 1-18-07 has been cancelled. In order to receive a 5% discount to our department for each faculty member, you must complete the program as outlined below. You will have until April 15, 2007 to complete this. If you chose not to complete the online course by the deadline, your professional dues account will be debited by $185, which is the 5% potential savings per faculty member to the department. If your professional account is a zero balance by that time, the carry-forward debit will apply to the next academic year. This year's web program concerns Texas State Board investigations, and is very timely. Thanks for your cooperation! Tom
http://www.bcmwebcast.org/riskmgt/tmbi.htm
The viewers must sign in for each of the four segments and fill in each of the four surveys at the end of each segment in order to obtain credit for the discount. If the viewers have any difficulty with the segments hanging up, the problem is usually the viewer's computer. It more than likely does not run fast enough. If the viewer has this problem, IT (path-it@bcm.edu or 713.326.3562) should be able to help.

Announcement of Grants for Cancer Center Pilot Projects
The BCM Cancer Center wishes to announce the availability of funding for pilot grants of $15,000 per year for two years. The funds are designated to support the early stage (or an expansion) of a collaborative project between two (or more) laboratories. The project should relate to cancer research, and preference will be given to applications with a strong potential for translational research. Project descriptions are limited to 5-6 pages not including references, but should be in a standard NIH grant format. The application should include specific aims; background and significance; preliminary studies; research design and methods; a few references; a budget and budget justification; a biographical sketch and an other support page. Funds are not intended to provide PI salary support or to purchase equipment. Faculty members at all levels are eligible to apply. Five copies of this application are due by 5:00 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2005. Applications should be delivered to Shari Stark, The Cancer Center, BCM Room 450A. Funding is available Jul. 1, 2005.
For questions or additional information, please contact Ms. Stark at the BCMCC, 713-798-2087.

DeBakey research award honors outstanding scientists
HOUSTON -- (Nov. 15, 2004) -- Four Baylor College of Medicine scientists have received Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Excellence in Research Awards for their recent biomedical findings.
The 2004 winners of the annual award include:
[...]
. Dr. Nikolai A. Timchenko, associate professor of the Huffington Center on Aging and pathology at BCM.
During the ceremony, each recipient received an Excellence in Research medallion from DeBakey along with funds to support his or her research program. In a scientific symposium that followed, each scientist presented a synopsis of the winning research.
[...]
Timchenko investigates molecular mechanisms that regulate liver growth and differentiation during aging. He defined a transcriptional switch that explains how the liver's ability to regenerate weakens with age. He has also determined how liver cell growth may be affected by specific proteins that affect genetic material called RNA.
"During the past three years, Dr. Timchenko has published ground-breaking work that establishes the molecular mechanisms of why regeneration in the liver in response to trauma is markedly impaired in old compared to young animals," said Dr. Roy G. Smith, director of the Huffington Center on Aging, and professor of molecular and cellular biology and medicine at BCM.
Nominations are based on significant published contributions to clinical or basic biomedical research during the past three years. The DeBakey Medical Foundation provides funding for the awards.

D., associate professor of pathology and molecular and cellular biology at Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded a two-year, $200,000 grant from the Alpha1-Foundation to support his research on alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a disorder that leads to the development of both liver and lung disease. With this funding, Sifers hopes to uncover the molecular mechanism responsible for development of the liver disease in infants. An article describing Sifers' research, titled "The Reluctant Pioneer," is included in the Fall 2004 issue of the foundation's magazine, Alpha-1-To-One.
