Faculty Development

The primary faculty development strategy will involve workshops to be convened in years three and four of the project. The first workshop will be held in Houston on April 22-24, 2009. Each Faculty Development Program will involve pre-workshop readings, a cancer risk assessment and management skills instructional program, and the preparation of written Individual Action Plan. The IAP approach has been used with considerable success in prior faculty development efforts focusing on geriatric education.

The constructs of the IAP for the Texas PA Programs will address strategies for incorporating PACE resources into the learning experiences offered PA students at their respective institutions, and for interacting with institutional representatives to the Curriculum Enhancement in Undergraduate Medical Project.

Assigned pre-workshop readings will address:

  • Current cancer risk assessment and screening guidelines
  • The transtheoretical model of intentional behavior change
  • Effective styles of intervention communication
  • Assessing patient readiness to change
  • Cultural factors in the provider-patient interaction
  • MI skills in the clinical setting
  • Objective measures of counseling skills development

The workshop schedule will emphasize strategies for integrating cancer risk assessment and management content into existing curriculum and courses, versus creating new courses, as well as student performance assessment using the TOSCE. Each attendee will also be engaged in an activity designed to identify resources available to support introduction of modular cancer content. A secondary component of the workshop will involve participant review and critique of all resources used.
