Message from Peter G. Traber, M.D.
Dr. Michael E. DeBakey with the other presidents of BCM: (standing, from left) Dr. William T. Butler, Dr. Peter G. Traber, and Dr. Ralph D. Feigin
On behalf of the entire Baylor College of Medicine family, it is with profound sadness that I inform you of the death of Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. The College, and indeed the entire world, has lost a great man.
Dr. DeBakey was a man of immense passion in all areas of his life. He believed strongly in the tremendous value of education at all levels and found joy in being with high school students, college students, and medical and graduate school students. He instilled in all those he met a desire to do their very best, regardless of their chosen profession.
A gifted surgeon, he was recognized around the world by those whose lives he had touched. Anyone who approached him, whether a member of royalty, a military veteran or any person he met in his daily life, found him ready to listen to a personal story about someone he had helped.
With each passing year, he continued to provide great wisdom to those who sought his counsel. As Baylor College of Medicine began to make long-range plans, he took an active role in helping define and shape the plans for the school he had loved for more than 55 years. Generations of students, researchers and patients will benefit from his contributions to BCM's plan for the future and will be his legacy.
As the College's first President, he set a standard for preeminence and never let anyone here forget the importance of leadership in academic medicine. We have lost a man who was a great physician, educator, leader and above all, a great friend. We will miss him, but we will honor his memory by continuing to excel in those things he taught us.
Peter G. Traber, M.D.
