Laboratory of Cochlear Mechanics and Hearing Loss

Faculty: John S. Oghalai, M.D. (713-798-3234)

Research focus: This laboratory is dedicated towards understanding mechanisms within the cochlea that underlie progressive sensorineural hearing loss and towards developing techniques to improve human hearing. Our research objectives are to better understand the relationship between the passive and active mechanical properties within the the cochlea and to develop techniques that can be used to modulate the function of the cochlear amplifier. The ultimate goals of these efforts are to develop therapeutic interventions for noise-induced and age-related hearing loss (sensorineural hearing loss).

Recent trainees:
Etai Funk, M.D.
Ann Marie Visosky, M.D.
Amman Mazhar
Brad Evans, M.D (resident): Modulation of basilar membrance stiffness.
