Emergency Medicine Organizations
American College of Emergency Physicians
Formed in 1968, ACEP is the largest and oldest organization representing emergency physicians. It "exists to support quality emergency medical care, and to promote the interests of emergency physicians." ACEP is arguably the most politically active organization within EM.

Emergency Medicine Resident Association
Formed in 1974, EMRA is the largest and oldest association for EM residents in the country. Affiliated with ACEP, EMRA's mission includes serving residents, fellows, and medical students pursuing EM through education, communication, networking, representation to other organization, and promoting research. Their web site contains calendars of events of interest to EM residents and students, as well as a number of articles regarding life as an EM resident and points of consideration for students evaluating a medical career in emergency medicine. Many of the articles are only accessible to members of the EMRA.

Benefits include subscription to EM Resident (an every-other month publication with EMRA news, cases, and intersting info), EM Practice (online monthly publication aimed at evidence-based evaluation of common EM complaints), Emergency Medicine: Top Clinical Problems (a pocket guide to common EM problems), and Emergency Medicine: Medical Student Survival Guide (online guide to aid medical students interested in EM.) Society for Academic Emergency Medicine
Formed in 1988, SAEM is the academic voice within EM, with a mission to improve patient care by advancing research and education within EM. As such, their focus is in academic issues, research, health policies, and education.

American Academy of Emergency Medicine
Formed in 1993, AAEM is dedicated to bringing the highest quality emergency care to the public. It believes this can be provided by an EM specialist - believing that achievement of board certification represents the only acceptable method of attaining recognition as a specialist in Emergency Medicine. In addition, it is dedicated to fair and equitable practice environments.

Benefits include a subscription to The Journal of Emergency Medicine (published eight times per year), Common Sense (AAEM's newsletter), a copy of AAEM's Rules of the Road for Medical Students (book with an inclusive look at EM, the application process, etc.), and discounts at AAEM's scientific assembly. A free membership is available but you do not get the subscription to JEM or copy of Rules of the Road.
