Biography
John A. Hipp, Ph.D. directs the Spine Research Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine. His research interests include quantitative diagnostic imaging and spinal biomechanics. Dr. Hipp has directed the development of technologies to measure spinal instability in patients with spinal disorders, technology to predict the risk of fracture and the response to treatment for adults with cancer that has spread to bone, and children with benign defects in their bones, and technology to calculate contact pressures in the hip joint to help optimize the results of surgery to correct hip dysplasia. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles as well as several book chapters. He has also presented his research at many national and international meetings.
Dr. Hipp has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Whitaker Foundation, and many industrial sources. He has supervised and supported research projects for numerous graduate students, orthopedic residents, and orthopedic fellows. Dr. Hipp also serves on scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health. In addition to directing the spine research laboratory, Dr. Hipp is the chief scientist for Medical Metrics, Inc, which is a Houston-based medical technology company that was started by BCM Technologies to bring quantitative imaging technologies from the laboratory into widespread clinical practice.
