Rotation
Outpatient and Inpatient areas of Texas Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital
for Children – Houston
Broad based exposure to all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics, including amputations and prosthetics, cerebral palsy, genetics, growth and development problems, hip, knee & foot deformities, limb length discrepancies, metabolic diseases, musculo-skeletal infectious processes, neuromuscular diseases, non-malignant neoplastic diseases, spinal disorders, upper extremity disorders, and trauma.

Conferences
Attendance is required at the following weekly conferences: Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Grand Rounds, Shriners Pediatric Orthopaedic Journal Club, Shriners Surgical Indications Conference, Houston Pediatric Orthopaedic Conference. Attendance is also required periodically at affiliated institutional lectureships and symposiums.
Research
Completion of at least clinical research project leading to manuscript publication in a peer reviewed orthopaedic journal is required. Two projects are strongly encouraged.
Follow-Up Care
Continuity of patient care is strongly emphasized, expecting the fellow to follow patients through the course of non-operative management, pre-operative evaluation, inpatient surgery, post-operative inpatient management, and post-discharge ongoing care throughout each 6 months rotation block.
Recorded Case Loads
The fellow is presented at the end of the fellowship with data for the numbers of outpatients seen and inpatient operative procedures performed by ICD-9 and CPT codes.
Outpatient Patient Population Base
Approximately 1200 patient visits are recorded monthly at Texas Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children – Houston.
Surgical Case Loads
A
Approximately 100 surgical cases are completed each month between the two institutions.
Teaching Aids
At the Shriners Hospital, 24 hour access is provided to a well stocked orthopaedic library with major orthopaedic journals and textbooks, as well as those pertaining specifically to pediatric orthopaedics. A full time librarian is available Monday – Friday for assistance. Computer access is provided for literature searches and presentation development.
