The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston is dedicated to training physicians to enter either clinical
practices or academic medicine.
Our teaching philosophy is based on the college's mission of: "Research, Education,
Public Service." Our teaching goal is to prepare our residents to deliver excellent and
compassionate patient care, and to serve as consultants to other physicians in the
communities where they practice after training.
To achieve the educational goals established by the Council on Resident
Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG), our fully accredited
training program utilizes a variety of teaching methods. Hands-on
experience in public and private hospitals combined with Grand Rounds,
Mortality and Morbidity Conferences, a Didactic Lecture Series,
service teaching rounds, service lectures, and service conferences
provide a majority of learning experiences. There is also a Journal
Club, which meets eight times a year.
Baylor College of Medicine faculty members are actively involved in original research. Residents can
take advantage of the opportunity to participate with faculty in research and writing when time and
interest permit. However, each resident is required to complete one research project. Each spring,
papers are presented by third-year residents at the Arthur M. Faris, Sr., M.D. Residents' Day
Program.
Baylor trained residents frequently go on to fellowships in Maternal/Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology, and Gynecologic Oncology. Board-approved fellowships are available in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Laparoscopy are approved by the Texas Medical Board.
