Since 1981, more than 110 nurse-midwives have graduated from the Education Program in the Baylor Midwifery Section, a part of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine. Baylor nurse-midwives offer prenatal care and well-woman gynecology in more than seven Houston- area sites and have delivery privileges at Ben Taub General Hospital. In addition, our midwives are educators in the Master of Science and Post Master Nurse-Midwifery Education Program.
In the early days, the midwifery practice was established at Jefferson Davis Hospital, one of the busiest maternal care settings in the United States. In 1990, the midwifery service moved to Ben Taub General Hospital, which is located in Houston's Texas Medical Center. About 900 women a year are assisted in their birth experience by nurse-midwives at Ben Taub General Hospital. Located in one of the largest incorporated medical centers in the world, student midwives are exposed to the some of the brightest minds in midwifery and medicine.
Dedicated to education, the Baylor Midwifery Section providers also are preceptors for the Community Nurse-Midwifery Education Program (CNEP) students and midwifery integration students from other programs. We work together with Prairie View A&M College's nursing education program and offer clinical rotations and electives for basic nursing students. This allows RN students to see nurse-midwives functioning in an advanced, independent role.

More than 13 certified nurse-midwives provide care for women and families in our many, multi-cultural clinical sites. Although mostly Hispanic, our clients represent every race and nation. Our motto could be "Have Baylor Midwife, will travel" because we have come to know all parts of Houston.
We are a unique breed. We are from everywhere - Barbados, New Mexico, Michigan, Oklahoma, New York, Texas, Louisiana, New Jersey, Alaska, Washington and more! Though we are different, we are unified in our desire to offer women the best health care possible. We are supportive of each other, and of each provider's special contribution to our service and our clients.
