The
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is one of Baylor College of
Medicine's largest clinical departments with 35 full-time faculty
members. More than 100 voluntary faculty members assist with clinical
care, residency training, and research.
The Department Chair is appointed by the College's Board of Trustees.
The Chair makes all recommendations for appointments to the faculty
and to the staffs of the affiliated hospitals. The Chairman upon
recommendation of a residency review committee appoints all residents
working at the affiliated hospitals.
Dale Brown, Jr., M.D. is Interim Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Amy E. Young, M.D., serves as Director of the Residency
Program.
The Department has seven divisions: Maternal/Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, Gynecology, Generalist Ob/Gyn and Medical Education, Reproductive Genetics, and Contraceptive Research.
Dr. Dale Brown, Jr., is a professor and Interim Chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1964. He completed his residency training at the Tulane Unit of Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA., in 1968. After service in the United States Air Force, he became a certified diplomat of the The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1970. After his military service, he began his private practice in Amarillo, TX. In 1971, he moved to Houston. The following year, he began a clinical teaching relationship with BCM. In March of 2000, he became a full-time faculty member and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of OB/GYN at Baylor.
Dr. Brown is active in numerous national and international medical and scientific organizations. He serves as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has served as president of the International Society for the Study of Vulvar Diseases and has served on the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Study of Vulvar Disease. He is widely published and is recognized as an authority in the area of vulvar diseases. In 2001, he received an Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In addition, he was recently recognized by his peers as the most outstanding obstetrician and gynecologist in the Houston area.
Dr. Brown's interests in clinical practice focus largely on diseases involving the lower genital tract but he also sees patient with a multiplicity of gynecology disorders. Major research interests are related to vulva vaginal disease and pelvic reconstruction. He is the co-author of the textbook "Benign Diseases of the Vulva and Vagina" which is currently in its 5th edition.
Dr. Amy Young is an Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
She received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt and her medical
degree from the University of Mississippi. She joined the faculty
upon graduating from the Baylor Residency Program in 1996.
