OB/GYN Medical Students Clerkship

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers numberous opportunities in education for current medical students.

Core Clerkship

The OB/GYN core clerkship, under the direction of Dr. Susan Leong-Kee, is part of the core clinical curriculum for BCM medical students. Students are able to enroll in the rotation as early as the second semester of their second year of medical school. The clerkship is eight weeks in duration (four weeks on Obstetrics; four weeks on Gynecology) with 30-32 students enrolled in any given term.

The 4-week OB service includes the following:

  • One week of OB intake
  • One week of OB Night Float
  • One week of OB Clinic
  • One week of OB Labor & Delivery

All four weeks of service are located at Ben Taub General Hospital and overseen by the OB/GYN residents.

The 4-week GYN service includes:

  • Two weeks of GYN Surgery located at BTGH, St. Luke's or the VA
  • One week at People's Clinic
  • One week at a Private Clinic

During the private clinic week, students will rotate with volunteer clinicians in the medical center or our Generalist Faculty at Baylor Clinic.

Each week, students attend faculty-presented lectures and participate in workshops on topics such as suturing and pelvic exam training. The term concludes with a departmental exam and the national shelf exam. An overall grade is given based on student performance on the exams and clinical evaluations completed by the residents during the OB and GYN services.

Currently the core clerkship is only reserved for Baylor College of Medicine students.

Non-Baylor students who have completed their core clerkship in OB/GYN at their home institution are invited to apply for electives through the BCM Office of the Registrar.

OB/GYN Elective Program

The BCM department of OB/GYN offers the following five, 4-week electives to BCM students and visiting medical students who have completed their core OB/GYN clerkships:
