Faculty Kudos

Dr. Jane Montealegre, assistant professor in Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, was awarded a grant for $2,499,180 by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The funding will be used to advance the implementation of evidence-based strategies for tobacco prevention and HPV vaccination in pediatric safety net settings.

Dr. Fred A. Pereira, associate professor of the Huffington Center on Aging, molecular and cellular biology and otolaryngology, has begun a two-year term as a member of the American Heart Association Strategically Focused Research Awards Oversight Advisory Committee. The committee is charged to assure the award mechanisms (i.e., merit, collaborative sciences, established investigator) achieve their study aims and overall objectives.

GME Professionals Day: Aug. 19 was designated as Graduate Medical Education Professionals Day by the Association of Hospital Medical Education. The Baylor community would like to recognize the immense dedication of its GME professionals who support more than 170 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited programs and non-standard training programs. The professionals are crucial to the programs' success.

Coming Up

Tropical Medicine Diploma: A virtual informational session on Diploma in Tropical Medicine will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 1. Speakers include Dr. Jill Weatherhead, assistant professor of tropical medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Eva Clark, assistant professor of infectious disease, and Dr. Kathryn Jones, associate professor of pediatrics – tropical medicine. Cardiovascular Sciences Seminar Series: On Aug. 31, the Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Texas Heart Institute will host the first seminar, "Blood Pressure Regulation: A Microbial Perspective" with Dr. David Durgan, assistant professor of anesthesiology and cellular and molecular physiology. The in-person talk will be at noon in room N315, located on the third floor of the Alkek building. The James T. Willerson, M.D., Cardiovascular Sciences Seminar Series is open to all interested in cardiovascular sciences. Email cvri@bcm.edu for a calendar invite.

TMC Orchestra: The award-winning Texas Medical Center Orchestra returns to the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 27 for its 22nd season with a performance, "La Zarzuela Vive!" TMCO members will present a selection of orchestral and solo pieces in a salute to the art of zarzuela – the Spanish-language light operettas. TMC Orchestra will be joined by the International Voices Houston choir and feature Houston Grand Opera tenor Ricardo Garcia and soprano Jimena Montserrat. Excerpts include energetic march and dance music as well as ballads in genres from pasodobles, seguidillas, habaneras and jota from the operatic masterpieces of Spanish-speaking composers such as José Serrano, Pablo Luna, Augustin Lara, Amadeo Vives and Tomás Bretón.

Faculty Senate constitution: Current faculty members are asked to cast their vote to approve the proposed amendments to the Faculty Senate Constitution. View the proposed constitution amendments (executive summary). Deadline to vote is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 31.

Development Workshop: On Sept. 8-9, the All of Us Evenings with Genetics Research Program will host "Entering Mentoring Training," a facilitator development workshop. Participants will learn effective facilitation skills, create and or/adapt context specific curricula and gain resources to support successful implementation and build a community of practice. Faculty Opportunities

Faculty needed: The All of Us Evenings with Genetics Research Program, hosted by the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, is seeking Baylor faculty to assist in training for the Researcher Support Bench. Faculty should have R, Python, and Jupyter Notebook experience. The position requires 2-3 hours per week. Learn more and apply to participate here.

SOAR Database: The SOAR database houses projects from investigators throughout the College. Faculty submit projects from a variety of research disciplines, and all Baylor faculty and those from Baylor-affiliated institutions are welcome to submit. Projects may be classified among basic, translational and clinical research, as well as medical education, patient safety and health services research. Visit the database to view existing projects and to submit your own. Instructions on how to post a project may be found by visiting the SOAR webpage. National Immunization Awareness Month: Submit your immunization records to the BCM BeWell portal and earn 200 points for completing your flu shot and up to 750 points for completing your COVID-19 vaccines. For questions, email wellness@bcm.edu or call (713) 798-1500.

Flu Vaccine Study: Baylor's Vaccine Research Center is looking for volunteers between 18 and 64 years of age to participate in a research study that compares how well two different licensed flu vaccines protect people from the virus.
